A study or work permit is not a visa.

We will not automatically issue you a visitor visa if you extend your study or work permit. If you need a new visitor visa, you may have to apply separately.

You can apply for a visitor visa from within Canada if you meet all of the following conditions

you are already in Canada;
you have a valid study permit or work permit;
you want to leave Canada and return in the near future;
your current visitor’s visa has expired or was valid for one entry only.
Apply at least 2 months before you plan to leave Canada.

If you applied online to extend your work or study permit
If we approve your application, you will receive a message in your online account, and you will receive your new work or study permit by mail. You can apply for a visitor visa before you receive your work or study permit in the mail, but you must submit proof that your application has been approved, such as:

a screenshot of your application being approved online;
your application number;
any other document that proves that your study or work permit extension is valid and has been approved.
